The Peninsula or Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok?

What hotel should I stay at between these two? Open to other recommendations around the same price range. Thank you in advance! What hotel should I stay at between these two? Open to other recommendations around the same price range. Thank you in advance!

kimpton all the way if u want to actually feel like you're in bangkok. the river at peninsula is pretty but it's tourist central, u'll be stuck taking their boat or fighting traffic. lang suan is where locals actually hang, walk to witthayu for some hidden bars and the park is right there for a morning run.

that said, if u care about the room itself, peninsula's beds are legendary. but kimpton's got that free social hour with drinks and the pool scene is way more fun, plus the breakfast spread is honestly one of the best in town.

other option nobody mentioned: the siam is a masterpiece but it's further out. for the same money, i'd actually look at 137 pillars, the suites are huge and the infinity pool on the 27th floor has that skyline view without the tourist crowd. just don't expect much walkability there.

honestly depends on what vibe you want. Peninsula is old school luxury on the river, great if you wanna be away from the chaos and use their boat shuttle to Icon Siam. Kimpton Maa-Lai is newer, more of a lifestyle thing, rooftop pool is killer and the neighborhood (Langsuan) is way more walkable for cafes and BTS.

if you're into food and nightlife, Kimpton wins easily. the river area is pretty dead after 10pm unless you're at a hotel bar. but if you want that classic Bangkok river view and don't mind taking taxis everywhere, Peninsula is the safer bet.

another option around that price is the Siam, it's a bit quieter but the rooms are massive and the service is next level. or check out the Standard at Mahanakhon, same price range, the view from the 76th floor is insane and it's right on Chong Nonsi BTS.

been to both, peninsula feels like u're staying at a museum, kimpton feels like u're staying at a friend's cool apartment. that said, if u can stretch a bit, the capella is the real hidden gem, the service there is on another planet and the riverside is way quieter than the peninsula's dock.

one thing nobody mentioned, the kimpton's social hour gets packed with expats, which is fun but not exactly local. if u want a quieter version of that vibe, check out the standard at mahanakhon, the rooftop bar there is less crowded and the bts is literally at the door.

also, for food, kimpton's breakfast is great but the real move is walking to the morning market at lhong 1919 on the weekend, it's like 15 mins and u'll eat better than any hotel spread. peninsula's breakfast is fancy but overpriced for what it is.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
