I rarely get frustrated in Thailand, but when I do, it's stuff like this.

I have asked my juristic office 3 times for a duplicate card that allows access to the building and elevators. Once when I moved in last Sept,, once when I had a guest staying a couple of months ago, and again today.

Got the same answer each time, we are out of inventory, sorry. For eleven months. And it's a new building.

When I moved in, the scanner would not register my finger prints, so I do not have any other option but the card. I will be going in to the office tomorrow and try the finger scanning thing again, but given the track record of the folks running this beehive, I expect more of the same. Blank looks and no solution.

I have a guest coming Friday for the rest of the month, and it will be incredibly inconvenient if I cannot have a second card. I will not be going places and doing things with her all of the time, and her not having a card is going to make things complicated. No solution is unacceptable,

So, my question is, is there a shop or something where I can get my card duplicated? Or a place I can get a blank card from another source that the juristic office can then program? I have no clue how that stuff works... I can have my lease and passport to assure I am not up to something if there is a shop. I imagine there are no options such as I mentioned, but I thought I would ask. would be delighted to be wrong!

Any suggestions will be appreciated, thanks!

honestly i'd skip the duplication shops for now and go nuclear on the juristic office tomorrow. bring your lease, passport, and a screenshot of your conversation with the landlord if you have one. ask to speak to the "manager" not the staff, and say you need a written confirmation that they refuse to provide a key card for your guest. that usually gets them moving because nobody wants to put that in writing.

if they still give you the runaround, theres a key cutting shop on soi 71 near the phra khanong bts that does card cloning for like 200 baht. but it only works if your card is the basic rfid kind, not the encrypted ones they use in newer towers. you can tell by holding it up to a light - if you see a visible coil inside it's the easy kind. if it's solid black with no visible parts, youre prob stuck with the office.

worst case scenario, just have your guest use the service elevator. most buildings have a different system for that one and the security guards rarely check. not ideal but it works for a month.

Try the hardware stalls at Chatuchat market on the weekend, the ones near the plant section. They carry all kinds of access card blanks and cloners, and the sellers usually know which ones work with which systems. Amorn is more reliable for electronics but Chatuchak has better variety for this specific thing.

If the card is a standard 125kHz type, any decent copy shop near a university can do it in 5 minutes. But if it's the newer 13.56MHz with encryption, you're stuck with the juristic office. In that case, go straight to the building manager's email, not the front desk. Copy your landlord on it too, that usually lights a fire.

ah this is a classic condo tower management thing, happens all the time in newer buildings around sukhumvit. since theyre holding the cards hostage, your best bet is to hit up amorn electronics in fortune town or the one at central ladprao, they do key card duplication but its hit or miss depending on the card type. bring ur original card and theyll tell u if its a standard mifare or something proprietary. cost like 150-300 baht.

if that doesnt work, honestly just escalate to the juristic manager directly, not the front desk people. ask for the building's management company name and call them. ive seen this exact script play out where the office just doesnt want to order more because the building is new and their system is a mess. a bit of polite pressure on the right person usually gets it sorted within a day or two.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
