Bangkok is chaos. I know that. Bangkok is traffic. I know that, too.

But after just getting back from a trip to Tokyo, the chaos of the traffic outside my condo here in Bangkok is starting to grate on me.

I know I live in an amazingly congested part of the city (Asoke), but my assumption was that in order to avoid the chaos, you'd have to go so far away that you wouldn't feel like you're in the city; you would need your own vehicle, would be no high-rise condos, cutoff from transportation, etc.

Is that true? Are there places that still feel like being in the city, but with moderate amounts of traffic and chaos and grime?

yeah you can get that vibe in sathorn soi 10 or 12. its weird because sathorn road itself is a nightmare but those sois are like a quiet bubble. lots of old trees, some embassies, a few low rise condos and townhouses. theres a little park called sathorn 11 garden that nobody seems to know about. you can walk to lumphini or the bts in under 10 mins but it feels like a suburb inside the city

another one is the area around suan plu. its behind the lumpini boxing stadium, basically a grid of narrow streets with old wooden houses and random gardens. the traffic is just local residents going home. you can hear birds and sometimes temple bells from wat hua lamphong. the mrt is a short walk and you're in silom or sathorn in 5 mins by taxi. feels completely disconnected from the main road chaos

ngl theres a whole pocket around nang loeng that most people miss. its between ratchathewi and dindaeng, old bangkok with these wide quiet soi's where the government bungalows are. you get the kings college bangkok campus there, lots of trees, zero traffic noise. walk 10 mins and you're at the bts ratchathewi or the airport link. some decent condos going up but the vibe is sleepy residential with actual footpaths

also worth checking out the area behind lumphini park, like sarasin road. its basically a tree lined street connecting the park to witthayu. feels like a different city. some embassies and old townhouses, no high rises blocking the sky. traffic is minimal because its a dead end for cars. you can get to silom in 5 mins on foot but hear nothing but birds

honestly you dont have to go that far. phra khanong area around w district and the bts still feels city but way less intense than asoke. the soi's off sukhumvit 71 have actual trees and sidewalk space in spots, plus you get the canal vibe from khlong saen saep. traffic is still there but not that soul crushing sukhumvit road gridlock

another option is bang rak near the river, like around charoen krung soi 30 or 36. old school shophouses, narrow lanes, river breeze, and you're still 10 mins from sathorn. no high rises but plenty of condos and the bts is a short walk or motorbike ride. feels like a different century compared to asoke

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
