Anyone interested in Joining a Thai language class at Thammasat (Bangkok Campus)?

honestly the thammasat tha prachan location is underrated for studying, the libraries stay open late and there's a quiet courtyard near the faculty of arts that's good for reviewing vocab before class. 266 baht per hour is solid, most of the tutors near khao san charge 300+ for worse quality. if u want to save even more on snacks before class, the roti lady on phra chan soi 2 is 15 baht and she's there until 7pm most nights

ngl i've taken thai classes at a few places around bangkok and this is a really good price for the quality you're getting at thammasat. the tutors they contract through usually have solid credentials, not just random native speakers. if you're worried about the writing system, don't be - most people pick up the tone rules faster when they can see the script rather than just guessing from transliteration. grab a cha yen from the stalls near the pier before class, it's like 20 baht and way better than the stuff at 7-eleven

I've been through the Thai writing system at a few places around Bangkok and 266 baht an hour for this setup is genuinely fair. Most places near Siam or even the smaller schools around Banglamphu charge closer to 400 per hour for comparable group classes. The Thammasat location is convenient too, plenty of cheap food stalls on Phra Chan Alley before class if you want to grab something quick. Just a practical note, the class will move through the consonants and tones fast in those first few weeks so try to practice a little on your own between sessions.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
