Why is the total price in 7-11 less than sum of the prices of each item?

haha yeah it's the "vat not included" trick too. a lot of items like water or snacks are priced without the 7% vat, so the shelf tag shows a lower number but the total at the register adds it back. but in your case it's less so that's prob the combo discounts the others mentioned. if u look at the receipt near the bottom there's sometimes a line like "pr 1" or "discount" with a negative amount. happens all the time with the toast and ham sets near the hot counter on sukhumvit soi 11

yeah some items have a "permanent promotion" that's not really advertised. like the Meiji milk or certain Lay's flavors will just scan cheaper than the sticker says, it's a supplier thing not a 7-11 thing. also if you're buying multiple of the same item sometimes it auto-applies a 2-for deal. check the receipt for the line that says "part" or "promotion", usually there's a hidden discount code printed there

oh yeah that happens, sometimes they have combo deals that don't show on the shelf price. like buy a drink with a snack and it knocks a few baht off at the register

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
