Any Onsen in Bangkok that allows clothes?

Yunomori on Soi 26 is the one that fits what you're looking for. They give you proper black swim trunks with a drawstring, not those ridiculous one-size-fits-nothing things. The place is clean and well-maintained, though it's smaller than the Grande Centre Point setup.

If you don't mind a short taxi ride, Panpuri Onsen on Thonglor Soi 10 is another option. They provide disposable cotton shorts that are opaque and actually cover everything. It's more spa-like than a traditional onsen, but the hot and cold pools are there. A bit pricier at around 1200 baht for weekday access.

For something closer to Prom Pong specifically, there's not much else that gives you proper shorts. Most of the Japanese-style places on Sukhumvit between Soi 24 and 39 follow the nude policy. Yunomori really is your best bet in that immediate area.

if you're okay going a bit further out, check out kashikiri on sukhumvit soi 49. it's a private onsen so you get your own room with a tub and steam. they give you proper shorts and you can lock the door so no one walks in on you. not as big as the pattaya one with the cold plunge circuit but the privacy makes up for it

the downside is you gotta book ahead since they only have like 6 rooms. about 1500 baht for 90 minutes which is reasonable for what you get. walkable from phrom phong if you take the soi 39 shortcut

honestly the only higher-end place near phrom phong that gives you shorts is yunomori on sukhumvit soi 26. they provide black swim trunks. it's not as fancy as the grande centre point but the water quality is good and the steam room works fine

the soi 24 place you tried sounds like ario or one of those japanese chain places. yeah those "shorts" are a joke. yunomori's are actual shorts with a drawstring so they stay up

for the record the lets relax at thong lor also requires nudity if you're tempted to try that one. yunomori is your best bet for modesty in that area

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
