Planning to Paddle board in Bangkok Canal. Is it allowed?

My condo is just opposite big canal in Bangkok so planning to buy stand up padal board and surf around when I have a time but I want to know is it legal and how safe is it, because I don't want to offend any local who do fishing and any other way.

honestly depends which canal. some of the big ones like khlong saen saep have regular boat traffic that'll kick up wakes and the water is basically grey soup. if you're near something like khlong bang kapi or further out in nonthaburi it's calmer but still gotta watch for longtail boats that come out of nowhere

safety wise most locals won't care if you're paddling around, just don't get in the way of the fishing lines or tie up near their traps. the water quality is the bigger issue tbh, especially after rain when everything flushes in. i'd wear an old pair of shoes and maybe skip the days when it smells extra funky

legally there's no law against it but nobody really does it in the inner city canals so you'll stand out. fine as long as you're not blocking the khlong or causing trouble

ngl the water quality is the main thing people don't think about. khlong saen saep and similar inner canals get raw sewage runoff, especially after a rain, so you're basically paddling through a toilet. if you fall in, rinse off immediately and don't swallow any

if you're set on doing it, go way out to somewhere like khlong samrong or the canals in samut prakan where the water's actually moving and cleaner. also grab a bright life vest or flag, those longtail drivers are not looking for someone floating at water level and they don't slow down

It really comes down to which canal you're on. If you're near something like Khlong Prapa or the ones out past Min Buri, the water is cleaner and there's less boat traffic, so you'd have an easier time of it. The inner city canals are mostly drainage and garbage, and the locals who fish there are often doing it for food, not sport, so you might get side-eye if you're splashing around near their lines.

Time of day matters a lot too. Early morning before the longtails start running is your best bet, and you'll see fewer people out. Just keep an ear out for the sound of a motor, those boats come around blind corners fast and they don't stop for anyone.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
