try bangrak digital on charoen krung road near saphan taksin bts, they do vhs to usb for around 500 baht per tape and handle minor tape damage like loose spools. for serious repair like mold or torn tape, better check with the old shop at fortune town IT mall on the ground floor, they're pricier but actually open the cassette shell. avoid the places in mbk charging 800+ for the same thing, they just send it out anyway

For the actual conversion itself, there's a shop called Memory Keeper on Soi Thonglor 13 that does a decent job for 450 baht per tape. They give you the files on a flash drive or external hard drive, and they'll sit with you to check the quality before you leave. If the tape needs repair beyond what they can handle, they'll tell you upfront and point you to a repair specialist nearby rather than just taking your money and doing a half-baked job. I've used them twice for old family videos and the results were solid.

If the tape has visible mold or smells musty, don't bother with the standard shops. There's a guy on Soi 31 off Rama 4, no sign outside, just a metal door with a faded sticker that says "Video Repair." He charges 1,200 baht for a full clean and transfer, which is steep, but he actually washes the tape reels by hand in a solution. Most places won't touch moldy tapes at all or just tell you it's gone. Bring cash, he doesn't take cards.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
