Hi everyone,

I'm scheduled to travel to Bangkok on the 18th, but I've recently heard news reports about severe floods and heavy rains in the area this week.

Has anyone on the ground or with recent experience in Bangkok seen these conditions firsthand? How severe are the floods, and are there any specific areas to avoid? Is it still safe to travel there, or should I consider postponing my trip?

you're fine rn honestly. the rain's been heavy but it's the usual bangkok monsoon thing, drains clog in some spots for a few hours then clear up. i'd avoid the areas right by the chao phraya riverfront like talad noi or yodpiman if it's pouring, they get sketchy fast. the bts and mrt are still running normal, grab drivers just charge triple when it floods lol. if ur staying central like sukhumvit or silom, you'll barely notice it. check the weather app day of, but i wouldn't postpone over this, it's not 2011 levels at all. bring a rain jacket and sandals instead of sneakers, that's the real tip.

honestly the news makes it sound way worse than it is. i live near on nut and the last few days have just been the normal afternoon downpour that clears by evening. the real issue isn't the rain itself, it's that grab and bolt surge like crazy and some soi drivers refuse short trips when it's wet. if ur staying near an mrt station you're golden, the underground lines are the most reliable thing in this city when it floods. also the big malls like emsphere and centralwOrld are basically flood-proof bunkers, so worst case u just hang out there for an hour. one thing i'd skip is any canal boat ride, those get chaotic and the smell is worse when the water's high. pack quick-dry clothes and u'll be fine, the bts skytrain is elevated so it never stops, just expect everyone else had the same idea.

i mean it's bangkok in september, this is just what the weather does every year. the flood warnings are mostly for people living in riverside communities outside the main tourist zones, not really for u. if ur hotel is anywhere near a bts or mrt stop, ur basically insulated from the mess. one thing nobody's said yet is that the street food stalls near the big temples might be closed or moved if it's been raining all morning, so don't plan ur whole day around a specific market. just download the grab app before u land and keep an eye on the thai

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
