Hip hop open air or sky bars?

Any recommendations? Any recommendations?
arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

If you want open air without the sky bar markup, head to Sing Sing Theater on Sukhumvit 45. It's not a rooftop, but the courtyard is open to the sky, the DJs play proper hip hop and funk, and the decor is this wild Chinese opium den aesthetic that feels way more memorable than another glass box with a view. Drinks run around 300 baht, which is fair for the scene, and the crowd skews Thai creative types rather than backpackers.

For an actual sky bar that doesn't suck, avoid the ones on the river entirely. Try Above Eleven on Sukhumvit Soi 11, it's got a Japanese Peruvian menu and the open air terrace faces the city, not the river, so it feels less like a postcard. They play hip hop on weeknights when the tourists are at the river spots. Just get there before 9pm or you'll be waiting for a table.

honestly skip the sky bars on the tourist strip, they're overpriced and packed. if you want open air hip hop vibes, check out the rooftop at the Octave, it's got a decent DJ rotation on weekends and the view over Thong Lo is way better than the usual Chao Phraya spots. for something more underground, there's a small collective that does sessions at the top of a parking garage near Ekkamai, you gotta DM them on IG for the location, it's not on any map. drinks are like 150 baht there vs 400+ at the fancy places, and the crowd is actual locals, not instagram tourists.

yeah octave is solid but if ur already up that way hit the roof at the commons, they do this hip hop night every other friday, smaller crowd but the sound is way better and the food stalls below keep it real

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
