Ahhh!!

Currently looking for a good language learning school. Im not sure which to pick. I plan on taking trial classes, but does anyone here been to any of these schools?

im in my late 20s and i have been taking private tutoring for the last 3 months. still a beginner though

im interested in the 1 year visa as well

honestly i'd skip the big four and check out a smaller place like Pro Language or even the AUA on Rajadamri. the visa thing is what locks you in, and most of these schools just partner with the same agents anyway so the 1 year is basically the same everywhere. that said, if you're still a beginner after 3 months of private lessons, the problem might be the tutoring itself, not the school. RTL is solid for structure but it's heavy on grammar drills, Duke is more conversational but the class sizes can be a toss up. AAA is fine if you just want the visa and don't mind a slower pace. ALA is the one i'd actually trial first, they do a lot of speaking practice and the teachers are patient with adults. just make sure you ask about the visa run policy, some schools make you do border hops every 90 days and that gets old fast.

yeah the visa is the real deciding factor here. most of these schools slap the same education visa sticker on, but the difference is how often you gotta renew. i did a stint at Duke and the 90 day reporting was annoying but manageable, though I heard ALA does 6 month stamps which is way less hassle if you hate immigration lines.

if you're still a beginner after 3 months of private tutoring, maybe try a group class at a few places before committing. group settings force you to speak way more than one-on-one, and you'll pick up the survival Thai faster. RTL's grammar heavy thing can be a slog if you're not into drilling, but their materials are solid if you like structure.

also check if they offer any cultural stuff or field trips, some schools throw in cooking classes or market tours. that's where you actually practice with real locals, not just the teacher. i'd hit up AAA just for the visa, but take the trial at ALA first, their teachers seem to actually enjoy teaching adults instead of just clocking hours.

The visa is the easy part to compare, but the real difference shows up in how they handle speaking from day one. I've known people at all four and the ones who progressed fastest were at ALA, mainly because they push you into conversations even when your vocabulary is tiny. Duke felt more like a social club when I visited, fun but easy to coast through a whole term without actually improving.

One thing nobody mentions is the homework load. RTL assigns a lot of it, which is great if you're disciplined, but it can feel like a second job. AAA is the most relaxed, almost too relaxed for some. If you already struggled with private tutoring for 3 months, maybe the issue is you need the structure of a classroom with other beginners to keep you accountable.

Ask about the teacher rotation when you do trials. Some schools swap teachers every term, which resets your progress, others keep the same person for the full year. That consistency matters a lot at your level. Also check if they do evening classes, most of these schools are morning heavy and that locks you out if you pick up any freelance work later.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
