Hi everyone,

I'm about to start a semester at KMITL and I'm trying to decide where to live during my stay. I would love to hear your opinions and experiences.

Ideally, I would prefer the big city vibe in Bangkok since I enjoy living in a bustling city. However, I'm concerned that I might be too far from the university and it could hinder my ability to connect with other students.

Are there any students here who commute from downtown to KMITL? If so, what has your experience been like? Would you recommend living close to the university or is the daily commute manageable and worth it?

Looking forward to your tips and advice!

Thanks in advance!

honestly if you wanna be downtown just do it, a lot of students make it work even if it's a pain. the key is picking somewhere near a bts station that's on the same line as the airport link, like phra khanong or on nut. you can take the bts to udom suk then hop on the free shuttle, it's about an hour door to door from those areas which is doable if you're only on campus 3-4 days a week. just be ready for the 8am classes to hurt, the shuttle fills up fast and missing it means waiting 20 mins in the heat. the social scene at kmitl is actually pretty campus-centric like the other person said, the bars and food on lat krabang road are where most people hang out after class, so if you're downtown you'll probably miss those spontaneous dinners and late night study sessions. if you're the type who needs to be in the middle of everything, go for it, but know you'll be trading convenience for the city vibe

commuting from downtown to kmitl is rough ngl. i did it for a semester from thong lo and it was like 1.5 hours each way on a good day, sometimes 2 if the traffic gods were angry. if you really want city life, look at places near on nut or udom suk bts stations, still a commute but shaves off 30-40 min compared to siam or thong lo. the shuttle bus from the bts to campus is free for students but it runs on its own schedule, sometimes you wait 20 min in the heat. honestly most of the social life at kmitl happens around the campus area anyway, there's a night market and some decent bars on lat krabang road, so you won't be totally isolated if you live nearby

I lived at On Nut when I was at KMITL and it worked fine. The BTS to Udom Suk takes maybe 20 minutes, then the shuttle bus to campus is another 15-20 if you time it right. The bigger issue is the shuttle schedule, it comes every 15-20 minutes but sometimes drivers just skip stops when it's full. I'd recommend getting a motorbike taxi from Udom Suk instead, it's 40 baht and takes 10 minutes.

The social aspect is real though. Most people hang out at the night market on Lat Krabang Road after class, and if you're commuting you'll probably skip those more often than not. I ended up crashing at a friend's condo near campus a few times a week just to avoid the trip home. If you're set on downtown, look at places near On Nut or Bang Chak, those are the last stops before the crowd thins out on the BTS.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
