It isn't just "normal" merchandise like toys, bedding, clothing, or tumblers but also Muji organizational items (baskets, cubbies, totes, drawers, etc) and luxury watches at Siam Paragon.

I mean...I liked the show, but it never got this popular back in the US. Why did this show, out of all shows, get so popular in Thailand?

The licensing push is real but there's a distribution angle people miss. Central and The Mall group control most of the mall space where you see this stuff, and they've been aggressive about bringing in character IP for their own promotions. We Bare Bears shows up in Central's campaign tie-ins, which means it gets floor space and endcap placement that a random cartoon wouldn't. Once a brand is in that system, it snowballs because every tenant wants the current hot thing in their window.

The other piece is that GMM and the Thai dub cast made the characters feel local. Ice Bear's deadpan lines land differently in Thai, the humor translates cleaner than most US animation. So it's not just cute mascot appeal, it's a show that actually got funnier in translation, which almost never happens.

ice bear is the one that did it & i say that as someone who watched the thai dub with my niece. the voice actor gave him this flat bored tone that thais find hilarious, like a moo krata vendor who's seen everything. also the show got looped on repeat during school holidays on truevisions so kids watched the same eps maybe 40 times, thats how you get a fandom that buys muji drawers with a bear on them. not deep, just saturation plus a dub that hit

A lot of it traces back to the LINE sticker economy. Thai chat culture runs on LINE, and We Bare Bears sticker sets got picked up massively here in a way they never did on Messenger or WhatsApp back home. When a character lives in everyone's group chats, the merch almost sells itself, because people already see Grizz and Panda every single day. I'd argue that's the difference between a show being watched and a show being part of daily life. You can still walk through Siam Square and see the sticker art plastered on phone cases and tote bags, which is a very Bangkok-specific kind of fame.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
