Should this family move back to Bangkok?

For various reasons, we've decided to leave Samui. The two next possibilities are Krabi and Bangkok. We enjoy both. Krabi has plenty to do for outdoorsy people, and Bangkok for city people. We're a bit of both. We're leaning toward Krabi because the air quality is so much better, and the materialism is much less pronounced. But Bangkok does have a pervasive draw with its food and entertainment options.

How is it these days for families, particularly families with only one child? Are children's play dates hard to arrange? How are the schools? Do you feel like you just wind up hanging out at the shopping centers every weekend?

No need to tell/lecture me about the air pollution - I'm an environmental policy expert by trade.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
