It kinda scarred me. I remember the army with guns out near palaces and temples.

Is it safe or what was that about?

That army presence you saw is pretty standard around the Grand Palace and major intersections like the ones near Sanam Luang. They've been posted there for years, it's not a response to anything recent or dangerous. The police escort at the airport sounds unusual though, most people just hop into the public taxi queue at Suvarnabhumi and it's fine. If you come back, just use the official taxi stand on level 1 where they take the meter, or use Grab which is more predictable. The city has a lot of street life and some areas get rowdy late at night, but day to day it's as safe as any big capital.

yeah that army thing throws a lot of people off but it's just standard protocol near the grand palace and government buildings, not a sign of danger. as for the airport thing, the police there are known to be overly protective of tourists especially solo travelers, it's more about making sure you don't get scammed than anything else. honestly bangkok's pretty chill these days, just avoid the late night soi cowboy scene if you're not into that vibe and you'll be fine. grab is way better than street taxis for peace of mind

nah ur good, Bangkok's super safe for tourists these days. that army thing is just normal for royal areas and political spots, they've always had guards there. the police escort thing sounds like they were just being extra careful with a foreigner at the airport, not cuz the city's dangerous. just use grab or bolt instead of random taxis and you'll be fine

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
