Have spent approx 6 weeks over three trips in the past 12 months solely in Bangkok. I love all of Thailand and have seen my share but I can't shake the energy that Bangkok gives off. My question is how long does that sense of wonder and excitement take to wear off (if ever) when you are living there.

Three years in and it's more about the small discoveries now. I still get a kick out of finding a new sois with a hidden garden restaurant or a coffee shop that roasts its own beans. The initial buzz of temples and night markets fades, but getting stuck in a traffic jam on Rama IV and spotting a street vendor making perfect roti never gets old. You just trade the tourist high for a deeper comfort with the place.

I've been here five years and the novelty doesn't really wear off, it just changes shape. The first few months you're chasing rooftop bars and Khao San Road chaos, but eventually you start noticing the quieter layers. For me, it's the morning routine at my local boat noodle spot on Sukhumvit Soi 38 that still feels special. That energy you feel as a tourist settles into a background hum once you have to deal with traffic and visa runs, but it never fully disappears.

six years in and i think the novelty just morphs into something else entirely. for me it's not about finding new places anymore but the weird comfort of routine, like the same old lady at my local market on charoen krung who remembers i like my mango sticky rice with extra coconut cream. you stop being amazed by the chaos and start being amazed by how you've become part of it, which is a quieter but more durable thrill

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
