Can you recommend where to celebrate Songkran ? Where did you find it impressive?

ngl the best spot i've found is along ratchawong road in yaowarat during late afternoon. the chinese thai community there does it different, more about the elders pouring scented water on your hands for blessings than just blasting strangers with hoses. you'll see these makeshift altars set up outside shophouses with little brass bowls.

if u want the water fight energy but less tourist hell, hit up khu bon road just outside the city. it's where the locals from the suburbs come in with pickup trucks and massive ice barrels. the water is genuinely freezing cold and people bring their whole families, grilling pork skewers on the sidewalk between water rounds

silom is the classic choice but honestly i think sathon road is better for a first timer. less wall to wall crowd but still plenty of people and the soi bang wa area has some great street food stalls set up during the festival. the BTS skytrain stations get wild too, people shooting water from the platforms so watch your phone.

if you want my real pro tip though, go to bangkok's old town around klong bang luang. the canal area has a smaller local celebration where families set up buckets and kids run around with super soakers. it's way more chill than the main zones and you get to see how thai families actually celebrate instead of just tourists partying. plus the boat noodles at the market there are killer.

honestly if you want the full water fight chaos, go to Silom Road in Bangkok. it gets packed but that's the fun part, everyone's drenched by 10am and the energy is wild. i liked Khao San Road too but it's more touristy and cramped, Silom felt more local with office workers joining in.

if you want something more traditional, head to Chiang Mai. the moat area is a blast and the vibe is less aggressive, plus you get the proper rituals like pouring water on Buddha statues at the temples. just expect to be wet from morning til night no matter where you go.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
