Am I completely missing the point of Bangkok?

Air pollution gets talked about as one thing but it's really two. The Jan to April burning season stuff is regional and genuinely bad, but there's also the everyday traffic exhaust that sits over Sukhumvit and Silom year round, which is a different problem and doesn't clear up in July. If you're sensitive to it, staying near Lumphini or along the river helps because you catch more breeze.

On the skyline thing, the reason it doesn't look like Hong Kong is that Bangkok has almost no height restriction enforcement but also no density push, so you get clusters of towers in Silom and Sathorn then a temple then a low-rise neighborhood. The view from King Power Mahanakhon is fine but the better one is just crossing the river on the Chao Phraya ferry at dusk, costs 15 baht and shows you the city as it actually is rather than as a postcard.

One thing nobody mentions, the malls here aren't just shopping, they're the public space. EmQuartier, Siam Paragon, even the older ones like MBK function as air-conditioned town squares because the city doesn't have many parks. If you skip them thinking it's just retail you miss how locals actually use the city.

imo the real issue is you're treating it like a sightseeing city when it's a living city. nobody actually loves BKK for the skytrain or the clubs, they love it for stuff like getting a 60 baht bowl of boat noodles at 11pm in Victory Monument or having a tailor on Sukhumvit Soi 3 remember your name after two visits. that texture only shows up once you stop checking off attractions.

also 2-3am closing is only true if you're in the tourist zones. out in the burbs like Bang Kapi or Ramkhamhaeng there's whole night markets and karaoke spots that run till 4-5am, locals dont even think of that as "nightlife" its just normal life.

if you came expecting Hong Kong you'll always be disappointed. its a different kind of city, messier and slower in a good way. give it a second shot in a random neighborhood like Ari instead of lower Sukhumvit and it might click.

Nightlife closing at 2-3am is a real thing but you're looking at the wrong scene. RCA and the Thonglor clubs do shut early cos of the licensing rules, but the actual night out here is the stuff that runs till sunrise, the after-hours spots around Sukhumvit Soi 11, the street bars in Phra Athit, the whole moo kata and beer garden culture. If you're judging it on club closing times you're basically reviewing a city by its worst metric.

On the air pollution, that's seasonal and it's genuinely awful Jan to April when the burning season kicks in up north. Come in July and it's a different city. A lot of people visit once in the smoky months and write the whole place off.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
