Why do most cats here have their tails cut?

another thing nobody's mentioned is that some of these cats are actually rescues from the old sois near yaowarat where they used to trap and spay but also clipped tails as a marking system. the vets and TNR groups would notch or cut the tip so people knew they were already fixed, saves them from being trapped again. you still see it with the colony cats around the riverfront, little flat nubs from the old days.

yeah the super short stubby tails are mostly just how the soi cats look around here, been like that for generations. you'll notice the same thing with a lot of the temple cats up near wat pho, they all have that little nub. some people still believe cutting a cat's tail brings good luck or keeps it from wandering too far, old superstition thing, but that's way less common now

honestly thats a common misunderstanding. most cats in Bangkok are actually born with naturally short tails, its a genetic thing from the local street cat population. you see it a lot with the Siamese and Korat breeds, they just have that kinked or stubby tail naturally. some people do dock tails for stray cats they take in, but its not as widespread as youd think.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
