How can I get back at my landlord who ripped me of 800,-?

Question

Looking for a way to get back at my former landlord that is not criminal, but a huge pain in the ass for him.

We are already considering legal action but it's probably not worth it for the money.

not gonna lie, leaving a brutally honest review on google maps and immobilienscout is probably the easiest. berlin landlords hate that because it shows up when prospective tenants search the address. also check if he's part of haus & grund or any professional association, you can file a formal complaint with them too and they actually investigate their members

Yeah, you could also report him to the Finanzamt if you suspect he didn't declare the rental income properly. Even a tip-off triggers an audit and that's a proper headache for him, plus it's completely anonymous.

If you still have keys or access to the building, check the Hausordnung. Landlords here are required to post the trash schedule and cleaning rotation. If he's not keeping up with his own duties like clearing snow or maintaining the courtyard, you can file a formal complaint with the Ordnungsamt. They take that stuff seriously in Berlin and it comes with a fine for him. Also, spread the word on the local Kiezladen or Facebook group for your old street, landlords hate getting called out by name in those circles.

honestly, just register every single issue with the Wohnungsamt. if he hasn't fixed something properly or there's a mold issue in the old flat, file a Mietminderung retroactively. it's a massive paperwork headache for him and totally legal. also leave a detailed google review and check if he's listed on any landlord blacklists like Berliner Mieterverein's database. the legal route might not be worth 800 euro but making him spend hours dealing with bureaucracy is free
