What are the typical challenges such businesses face in these circumstances, and what options might exist for its continuation?

one thing nobody mentioned yet is the Kundschaft itself. a lot of these rentals run on Stammkunden, schools, Vereine, regulars who book the same slot every june for 20 years. those people dont care who owns the boats, they care that someone picks up the phone. so if a family member or a longtime employee can keep the season running even half-assed, the customer base stays alive and the business becomes way easier to sell next year. let it sit one summer dead & you lose all of it, then ur just selling fiberglass

also worth asking the Nachlassgericht or a Notar about whether the business was in the Erbengemeinschaft or had a single Erbe, bc if its split between siblings who dont agree, nothing moves until someone buys the others out. seen that kill a Tegel boat place for two full seasons

The practical problem is usually the boats themselves. If they're registered with the Wasserstraßen und Schifffahrtsamt, each one has a Kennzeichen tied to the owner, and transferring the fleet to a new operator means new Zulassungen, TÜV style inspections if they're motorised, and proof of insurance before anything moves. That paperwork alone can take a season, which means the business misses the summer it needed to survive.

If the heirs want out, the cleaner route is often selling as an operating concern to someone already in the sector, maybe a Verleih on the Dahme or a sailing club that wants the customer base and the moorings. A pure asset sale usually gets you less because the goodwill walks away the moment the boats stop running. Worth checking whether there's a still-active Gewerbeanmeldung too, because if that lapses you're basically starting from scratch with the Bezirksamt.

something else to factor in is the boatshed or the slipway itself. a lot of these places sit on land that's either owned by the family for generations or leased from a private Uferbesitzer, and that's a totally different negotiation than the water Pacht. if the land was in the Erbmasse and gets split, you can end up with siblings who each own a strip of the access path, which makes a sale almost impossible without a Teilungsversteigerung first.

also check whether the boats are held by a GmbH or an Einzelunternehmen. if it's an Einzelunternehmen the whole thing dies with the owner and the heirs just inherit assets, but a GmbH can keep trading with a Geschäftsführer appointed by the Erben, which buys you time to run the season while you figure out a sale. that distinction is prob the single biggest thing deciding whether this survives.

What is the correct spelling for a street name that appears differently on multiple signs in Charlottenburg?

I noticed that the street name is spelled differently on three separate signs in the Charlottenburg area. Can anyone confirm the correct official spelling and whether this is a known issue? Worth noting that Berlin street names have official umlaut and ß rules that trip people up, so a sign showing "Strasse" versus "Straße" is not actually a spelling error, just an older transcription. Same with "ue" versus "ü" (e.g. "Kantstrasse" vs "Kantstraße"), both are considered valid renderings and you'll see the ß version on the blue Schilder and the ss version on older plaques or in databases that predate Unicode. If the difference you're seeing is between those two forms, there's nothing to fix and both are technically correct.

if the signs u mean are the old enamel ones on the house facades those are often protected as Baudenkmal so nobody's allowed to correct them even if the spelling is outdated. the binding version is whatever is in the Berliner Strassenverzeichnis plus the entry in the Liegenschaftskataster, so if u tell me the street i can point u to the right Bezirksamt Mitte or Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf page. tbh the merged district thing is real but the facade signs are a separate story, theyre basically museum pieces at this point

honestly thats super common in Charlottenburg, the district offices were merged from older Bezirke and nobody ever fixed all the Schilder. if its a real street you can check the official strassenverzeichnis on berlin.de, that list is what the Burgeramt actually goes by. which street is it? some of the Kaiserdamm / Kantstrasse signs are notorious for this.
