Unisex toilets?

Question

So I noticed that the toilets in the bars at Nana are mostly unisex, complete with urinals. So you'll literally be peeing at the urinal while 10-20 or so girls do their makeup in the mirror right next to you.

Even when it is separated I found girls just went into the men's toilet all the time to do their makeup etc even if there's no queue at all for the ladies. They just point to the urinal and tell you to pee there. Interesting setup, not seen this before. I can't imagine anything like this in England.

Is this normal in Bangkok bars and clubs or just unique to Nana I wonder?? What a crazy place...

yeah that's pretty standard for the naughty areas like nana and soi cowboy. the whole setup is designed to keep you spending, so they don't care about bathroom etiquette. you'll find the same thing at some of the bigger clubs on rca too, but it's less common in normal bkk bars or places like thonglor. honestly after a few singhas you stop noticing tbh

honestly it's not just the naughty areas, you'll see this at places like singha beer garden or even some of the rooftop spots near silom when it gets crowded. the thai attitude to gender separation in toilets is way more relaxed than back home, especially after a few drinks. if you want a proper segregated bathroom experience here, stick to the malls or nicer hotel bars

You'll see this setup all over Sukhumvit's nightlife, not just Nana. The bars on Soi 11 like Above Eleven and Sugar have the same vibe where the line between men's and women's loos just disappears after midnight. The clubs on RCA are even worse, I've had girls hand me my beer while I'm at the urinal so they could get to the mirror behind me. If you want a proper sit-down toilet with a door that locks, your best bet is one of the hotel bars like the one at the Landmark or the Marriott on Thonglor.

the places on suk soi 22 like badmotel and the speakeasy spots have the same setup, urinals right next to the sinks with girls doing their whole routine. it's just a bangkok thing, nobody cares after the first beer. if you want a proper private stall, the mandarin oriental or the siam hotel are your best bet but you're paying 400 baht for a gin and tonic there

susanne · Answer

It's not just the bar areas. Even in regular shopping malls like CentralWorld or Siam Paragon, you'll see women using the men's room if the queue for theirs is long. The staff don't bat an eye. The cultural line on that is just way blurrier here than in the UK. After a few years here it stops being a thing you even register.
