Wahts the point of the eID Electronic aufenthaltstitel?

Question

What are the practical uses of it? I have app, i scanned the document, changed pin etc

But what is the point of the app? if i need to have the physical card to access the data on the app.

yeah the app is kinda niche but it does work for things like proving your age at tobacco shops or getting into some clubs that have the eID reader setup. i've used it once to verify my identity for a job contract through an online portal, saved me a trip to the office. the physical card is still the main thing for authorities and travel tho, the app is just a convenience layer that most people ignore tbh

The app really shines when you need to prove your identity to something like the Elster tax portal or certain insurance companies that are part of the eID system. You can log in from your couch instead of dragging your card to a post office for a PostIdent. It's also handy for the AusweisApp2 itself if you ever need to request a Sperrkonto confirmation or a police clearance certificate online, though that's pretty rare. The physical card is still your main ticket for travel and the Burgeramt, but the app saves you from mailing sensitive copies around.

one thing nobody mentioned is the app works for checking your own data before something goes wrong. like if you're about to sign a contract that needs your exact Anmeldung date or residence permit type, you can pull it up on the app to double-check instead of fumbling with the card. also some landlords here in Berlin accept the digital verification for the Mietvertrag if they're techy enough, which saves you scanning and emailing your card photo. the app's main hidden use is avoiding those awkward moments at the Burgeramt when they ask for details you don't have memorized

You can also use the app to prove your identity at some city libraries or for the Berliner Sparkasse if you bank there, which saves scanning the card at a terminal. The PIN change feature is actually more useful than it seems too, because if you lose the card and someone finds it, they still need the PIN you set. Still, the whole system feels like it was designed for a world where every Kiosk and Amt has a reader, and we are not there yet.

i think the biggest thing is the app lets you do online ident without scanning the card each time, like for some job portals or bank stuff. also if you lose the card, the app still works for a bit until you block it, which is handy. the physical card is still king for travel and amt visits, but the app saves you from carrying it everywhere for random online checks
