if u want a completely different route, try the tailors around thong lor / ekamai, smaller shops that mostly do thai clients not tourists. i got a two piece at Empire Tailors on suk soi 49 (bit past the main strip) for around 18k, they actually asked about my shoulder slope and posture instead of just measuring the usual spots. for 5'5" the key is a shorter jacket that ends right at ur hip bone, not mid butt, so tell them upfront or they default to standard length.

At 5'5" you're going to run into the same problem at a lot of the Nana and Sukhumvit tourist tailors, they cut for a default Western frame and just take in the sides. What you actually want is someone who drafts a fresh block from your measurements, not adjusts a stock pattern. I've had good results with Narin Couture on Sukhumvit Soi 8, he's a one-man shop, does proper bespoke, and he's honest about what will and won't work on a shorter frame. Expect around 25,000 to 35,000 baht and three fittings over about two weeks, don't let anyone rush you into a 48-hour job.

rajawongse is really a harvard alum thing, their house cut just runs long and full, so yeah for 5'5 it fights u the whole way. worth trying a tailor who does a lot of women's jackets too, since those blocks are already drafted for shorter torsos and narrower shoulders. i've had decent luck with pinky tailor on soi 7/1, no flashy shop but the cutter actually sketches ur proportions before cutting. bring a jacket u already like the fit of, they can reverse engineer the shoulder and sleeve length off it.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
