Preferably cheaper since I'll only wear them for my time this trip (I already have multiple pairs at home).

Went to the mall yesterday but all of the boots from reputable brands are marked up at 5k-14k bhat. Ideally not looking to spend over 3000 bhat for shoes that I'll only be wearing, like, twice. So it's ok if they're not super legit.

Anyone know where I can find cheaper hiking boots?

if you're stuck in the centralwOrld area, skip the mall markup and walk over to the small outdoor gear shop on Soi Lang Suan, it's called "Outdoor Thai" or something similar. they've got a rack of discounted boots from last season for like 2000-2800 baht, nothing fancy but decent for a couple of treks. also check the Decathlon at the Big C Rajdamri, their entry-level boots are around 2500 baht and actually hold up fine for casual use, way better than the knockoff stuff imo

honestly you should check out the weekend market at Chatuchak if you're still around on sat or sun. there's a whole section of stalls selling surplus gear and knockoff hiking boots for like 800-1500 baht, just off soi 2 near the camping stuff. they won't last a year but for two hikes they'll do fine, just bring thick socks since the sizing's a bit off sometimes.

if you can't wait til the weekend, head to MBK on the BTS line from Siam. go up to the 4th floor where all the sports knockoffs are, you'll find boots for 1200-2500 baht easy. not gonna win any style points but they'll get you up and down a trail without killing your feet.

For a quick fix near CentralwOrld, try the Big C Extra on Ratchadamri Road, just a short walk down the BTS bridge. Their sports section has budget hiking boots from brands like Subzero for around 1500-2000 baht, not the best quality but they're fine for a couple of hikes. You can also check the outdoor gear stalls at Platinum Fashion Mall, the basement level has some surplus boots for under 2000 baht if you're willing to dig through the stacks.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
