How much tax will I pay?

So far, I have paid hardly any tax on my income and my payslips show that only a tiny amount is taken each month, meaning I am receiving almost 100% of my salary per month. A colleague recently told me that this won't last and soon I will start paying more tax and will receive less money at the end of the month. Anyone know how this works or when this will happen? I'm curious why I have been paying hardly any tax so far? I'm a 28 year old guy, not married, no kids, working full-time. Anyone know when I'll start paying more tax and how much? I have googled but can find no consistent answers. Thank you!

You are likely on what's called a provisional tax system. Your employer calculates your expected yearly tax based on your salary and spreads the deductions evenly across the year, but only once you've earned enough to exceed the personal allowance of 150,000 baht. For the first few months, you were basically using up that allowance tax-free, so nothing was withheld. Once your cumulative earnings cross that threshold, the monthly deductions will jump up to catch up on the tax for the whole year, usually around month 5 or 6 if you started in January. Check your payslip for a line called "Withholding Tax" -- if it's still zero or very low, you might see it spike in the next pay cycle. The actual rate depends on your total annual income, but for most single guys earning under 1 million baht, the effective rate ends up around 5-10% of your gross salary after allowances.

The personal allowance everyone is mentioning is 150,000 baht, but there's also a 50% expense deduction on employment income that caps at 100,000 baht, plus a standard deduction of 60,000 baht for being single. So for a single guy with no kids, you effectively don't owe tax on the first 310,000 baht you earn in a calendar year. If your salary is around 50,000 baht a month, you'll hit that around month 6 or 7, and then the withholding tax will start appearing. The rate after that is progressive, but for most people under 100,000 baht a month, it's 5-10% on the amount over the allowance. You can check your cumulative earnings on your payslip and do the math with the Revenue Department's online calculator to see exactly when it kicks in.

yeah that's the personal allowance thing kicking in, it resets yearly so u only really start paying tax after u've earned over 150k baht or so. once u hit that threshold the deductions catch up fast, prob see it in a month or two

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
