Hello!

I lived in BKK from 1996-2000 and really loved this band who would perform at Krung Thep punk legend Doc Mohoc's jewelry stall on Saturdays. They played a trance inducing combination of rock and mor lam/luk thung, which sort of resembled a Thai-ified Can or Velvet Underground. I spoke to them once and they enthusiastically referred to what they did as "country music", though they do not sound anything like any country music I've ever heard.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? Or anything else that might sound like this? I did manage to find a cassette entitled "Thai Folk Music", which was kind of similar, though the packaging bore no track titles or artist names :(

Thanks in advance!

That sounds like it could be Kotchakorn or maybe Sek Loso doing something unexpected, but the trance-like mor lam rock thing is pretty specific. You might want to check out Frong Thong's early work or The Butterflies from that period, they had a similar hypnotic groove. The cassette you found might be from the Sao Somsri label, they put out a lot of anonymous compilation tapes around then, usually sold near the market's main entrance.

ngl those two replies are way off. the band you're talking about is almost certainly Thaifoon or maybe Phai Phong but tbh i think you mean The Godfathers of Luk Thung Rock which was a loose collective that played around Doc's stall. they had this one song "Khao Kheow" that was like a 15 minute drone jam with a saw bass and a phin going wild. the cassette you found with no info is prob from Siam Inter Music, they used to press those anonymous tapes for market vendors. i'd check the Suan Lum Night Bazaar flea market if you're still around, there's a guy near the old cinema who sells stacks of those no-label tapes for like 20 baht each

oh man that sounds like it could be Job 2 Do or maybe Frong Thong but i think the band you mean might be The Sun or even Carabao with a weird experimental phase lol. if it's that trancey folk-rock stuff, try looking up Phongphat or the old Hangman stuff from that era. good luck digging through that cassette pile

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
