What set of information does the draft pull people from during the annual draft day? Is it the local house registrations?

Dual citizen here born originally in the US. I have a Thai Birth Certificate but no Thai ID or Passport and am not on any house registration yet. Only the Thai consulate in the US has information for the Birth Certificate.

Also, does anyone have any experience working for any branch of the Thai military?

The draft draws from the local district's registration database, which is tied to your tabien baan. If you're not on any house registration, you effectively don't exist in the system for the annual lottery. The consulate birth certificate stays in their own records, it doesn't flow into the Interior Ministry's database automatically. But if you ever apply for a Thai ID card or passport, they'll ask about your military status first.

For branches, I'd pick air force or navy over army if you can volunteer. My cousin was in the air force at Don Muang, he spent most of his time doing clerical work and got proper accommodation. The army conscripts I knew at a base near Bang Sue had worse living conditions and more random assignments. Volunteer service is only 6 months compared to 2 years for draftees, which is a big difference if you're trying to get it over with.

honestly if you don't have a tabien baan and no thai id, the draft board prob doesn't know you exist. the consulate birth record stays in the US system, it doesn't automatically sync to the thai military database. the annual draw is done by district based on who's registered for the year in that amphur's system. but if you ever try to get a thai passport or ID later, that's when they'll flag you for the draft. once you're in the system for the first time at age 20+, you can still get called up for the next draw.

i did navy basic as a volunteer, not a draftee. the main difference is if you volunteer you pick your branch and you get out faster (6 months vs 2 years). ngl, navy life at sattahip is pretty relaxed compared to army stories i heard. lots of time on base maintenance, occasional boat trips. the real downside is if you get assigned to a ship you're gone for weeks at a time with no signal.

yeah they pull from the tabien baan (house registration) mostly for the local district office draw. if you're not on any house registration at all, you might slip through the cracks but it's risky since your thai birth cert is on file with the amphur somewhere. best to check with a local lawyer who knows conscription law, there's a few around sukhumvit who handle this stuff for dual citizens

i did 2 years in the army as a conscript, it's boring more than anything. lots of waiting around and cleaning, not much actual soldiering unless you get sent to a border unit. navy and air force are supposedly more chill but harder to get into as a random draftee

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
