Any Canadians (with non resident status in Canada) working in Bangkok that can share their experience on taxation?

An American friend mentioned they only pay 15% income tax in Thailand as a result of the American treaty. TIA!

The Canada-Thailand treaty doesn't give you a flat rate like the US one does. You'll pay the standard Thai progressive rates on your work income, which max out at 35% for high earners. The treaty just makes sure you're not taxed twice by both countries, so you file in Thailand first and then claim a foreign tax credit on your Canadian return if needed.

Since you're a non-resident of Canada, the key thing is proving you've cut those ties properly with the CRA. I've seen people get flagged years later because they kept a Canadian driver's license or a bank account with a home address. A decent expat tax firm near Asok, like Bangers Tax or similar, can walk you through the NR filing requirements for about 5,000 to 10,000 baht.

so the canada/thailand tax treaty is actually pretty straightforward for most people. if you're a non-resident of canada (meaning you don't maintain significant ties like a home or family there), thailand taxes your income earned here first. the treaty mainly prevents double taxation, so you'd file a thai tax return and then a canadian one to claim a foreign tax credit if needed. your american friend's 15% thing might be from a specific provision in the us treaty, but ours is different - thailand's progressive rates go from 0% to 35% depending on how much you earn. i'd check with a local tax consultant who handles expats, maybe one near sukhumvit, since it's easy to mess up the residency status paperwork

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
