Stranded Indian medical scam?

He said he is stranded in Thailand and has lost his passport and needs money to stay somewhere. He was polite and spoke very fluent English, so I have him 200 THB and pointed him towards the embassy.

This weekend, I ran into 3 more Indians outside Emsphere (one by one). They all had a paper with them, with handwritten names and costs of some medicines, asking for money. They all appeared within 30 mins of each other and didn't hang around for more than 10 mins each.

Is this a common scam here? Should I report them to tourist police if I see them again?

ngl this has been going on for years, i first noticed them around nana bts back in 2018. the medicine paper thing is a dead giveaway, they always have the same handwritten prices for stuff like insulin or heart meds that are absurdly cheap here

if u really want to do something just take a photo of their paper and post it in the bangkok expat fb groups, that shames them more than cops ever will. but honestly just ignore and keep moving, theyre not gonna hurt u just annoying

it's a known scam, been around for years. the medicine list is a dead giveaway, they cycle through different sob stories. tourist police won't do much, they just relocate. best thing is to not engage at all, even a polite no can lead to them following you for a bit

nah this is definitely a known thing around here. i see them near nana and asok all the time with that medicine list, they swap out the names every few months. the passport story is just another variation of the same hustle.

if you really want to help without feeding the scam, just tell them the sukhumvit police box near soi 5 has a lost passport desk. they usually disappear fast when you say that. tourist police wont do much unless you catch them actively harassing someone.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
