dont overthink the label, half these "luxury" spots are just repurposed office buildings with a marble floor. look at the room itself, real five star here means a proper bathtub not just a shower, plus a separate rain head and a bidet in the toilet. also check if they got a butler floor, the chao phraya side like the peninsula has that, and the old siam is a whole different world, those river views at sunset are worth more than any star rating. if ur booking through a site and the pics show a tiny window, pass

look at the year it was built or last renovated, that filters out a lot of the fake stuff. a real luxury hotel in bkk will have spent serious money recently, think marble that's actually polished and AC that doesn't sound like a truck. places like the siam or the mandarin oriental have that timeless feel, but even the newer ones like the rosewood or the park hyatt, they invest in the details you can't see in photos, like the hallway carpet thickness and the door weight. if the room door feels hollow when u close it, that's not luxury, that's a decorated box. also, check if they have a proper limo service, not just a grab pickup, that's a quiet flex that separates the real ones from the wannabes.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
