you don't really "settle" here, you just keep extending your visa until it becomes permanent. i came on a work contract with a fintech company in sathon and three years later i'm still here. the non-b visa renewal is annoying but manageable if your company has a proper hr team that knows the process at the one stop service center on chamchuri square

the thing nobody tells you about living here long term is that the visa is only half the battle. you also need to figure out your banking situation, getting a yellow book if you want to register a car or motorbike, and dealing with the tax office if you're working remotely. i'd say spend your first month just getting a proper bank account sorted at kasikorn or bangkok bank, some branches will turn you away without a work permit but others are fine with just your passport and a rental contract

for the actual moving part, pack light and buy everything here. ikea delivers to bangkok in like three days and the furniture markets around chatuchak have decent stuff for half the price. your main cost will be the deposit on an apartment, usually two months rent plus one month upfront, and the visa fees which add up fast if you're doing extensions

moved here for a relationship that didn't last, but stayed because i found a decent gig running a small guesthouse in bangkok's old town near khao san. the visa route was messy at first, went from tourist to marriage visa to business visa when the relationship ended and a friend's company sponsored me. the business visa is the most stable if you can find a legit employer, but the new dtv is easier for remote workers, just need 500k baht in the bank and proof of income.

i'd recommend checking out the thai embassy website for your country, they list all visa types clearly. the retirement visa is also an option if you're over 50 with 800k baht in a thai bank account, seen plenty of people do that after selling property back home. just don't trust any agent who promises a visa without paperwork, the immigration office here is strict about that stuff

The education visa is another route that doesn't get mentioned much. I signed up for a Thai language school near Ratchathewi and it cost about 25k baht per year for the classes plus the visa extension fees. You have to actually attend classes though, immigration started cracking down on the no-show students a few years back.

If you're under 50 and don't have a job offer yet, the DTV is probably your best option right now. I've got friends who did the whole border run thing for years and they all say the DTV is way less stressful. Just make sure the 500k baht stays in your account for the required period before you apply.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
