Is 250 baht normal for a market meal in Bangkok 2026?
250 is tourist pricing. Old Market Hall stalls near the canal run 70 to 90 for pad thai, maybe 100 if there's chicken. Walk one soi back toward the wet market side and you'll see the real prices on the boards.

the boards are the tell, if there's no price posted just ask before ordering. also watch for dual menus, the laminated english one sometimes has different numbers than the thai one on teh wall.
Those canal stalls also tack on 10 baht if you want it with egg, which the boards don't always say. Ask for khai before they start cooking so they don't upcharge after.

Wet market side soi, ask for khai, 80 all in.
Night market side of the canal is the flip too, same stalls charge 120 after 5pm once the office crowd clears out.
Correct on the boards, but chicken pad thai on that soi still clears 100 during Chinese New Year week when the aunties jack up the farang rate.

True, that side stays quieter. Just mind the soi dogs near the south gate around dusk, they get bold when the food carts pack up. I usually loop the perimeter path instead of cutting through the middle.
Yep, quieter there, but the south stretch by the canal is the real hidden bit, hardly anyone walks it.
The north benches are still the old wood ones, but the shade by the canal makes them worth it before 8am.

One of them has a cracked slat that catches trousers, so sit on the far end closest to the spirit house.
