Is 180 baht normal for a pot of tea at The Leaf Room?

fmd_goodThe Leaf Room · #sukhumvit #oolong

For 180 I'd rather walk to the tea shop on soi 49, bigger pot and they don't nickel and dime on refills.

Soi 49 spot's name? Might swing by.

Name's Chaya on 49, tiny sign, easy to miss

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

180 is on the higher end even for thong lor, but the leaf room's rent on sukhumvit 51 soi is brutal, so i'd say it's location tax not tourist tax

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down
Image heiko local ·

Agree, that soi 51 rent is the real culprit

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

yeah rent there is nuts, plus the soi 51 crowd pays it without blinking so no reason to drop prices

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

the expat crowd on soi 51, they never check the bill

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

yep the thong lor crowd treats 180 like pocket change so nothing forces them down. fwiw the leaf room's been at that price for a while now and i dont see it budging. cheaper pots exist off the main soi if u dont mind teh walk

Location tax's been creeping west too, EmSphere rents now.

arrow_drop_up 5 arrow_drop_down

rent's only half of it, leaf room charges that because they can. the same pot at a no frills place down a side street runs 90 to 120. u pay extra for teh cushions and wifi

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
