March is brutal by 10am so aim for 7 and bring your own water, the little stall by the north gate does decent iced coffee.
Their cha yen is stronger than the coffee, and the bench under the frangipani by the west wall stays shaded til almost 9.
7 is right but that stall's cha yen beats the coffee imo, and they sell out of ice by 8:30.
Ask for it with less syrup, that's the trick.
fair, but i'd say get there closer to 8 if u want the cha yen, ice is gone but they'll still pour it warm-ish over what's left. tbh the roti cart on the corner is the better move by then anyway.
go at 6:30am when the monks are out and it's actually cool, then grab khao tom from the cart on Soi Ban Bat after.

yeah the moo ping lady opposite is teh real backup, shes usually still going til 9ish
6:30 works but the gate on Bamrung Muang side opens closer to 6:45 in my experience. If the cart's packed, the nam tao hu stall a few doors down is a solid backup and opens earlier.
The canal side benches catch shade earlier, so grab one before 7:15 and hit the 7-Eleven on Maha Chai for cold drinks.
best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026
Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.
for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.
honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
