glaze is fine but imo it's a sit-down pastry thing, not the donut craving fix. for that i go to the little stall on Sukhumvit Soi 23 near the Villa, opens around 7am, sells out by 10. proper old-school fried dough, not the fancy stuff. if u want the instagram donut then yeah glaze, but for eating i'd take the street one any day.

Fair point, but that stall's dough is better around 8 before the oil gets tired, and the pa thong ko next door is worth the queue too.
Spot on about the oil. I get there closer to 7.30 now, and there's a woman doing sangkhaya pa thong ko two stalls down from 6. Worth setting the alarm for.
the soi 23 one is solid but the real move is the pa thong ko cart at On Nut night market, fried fresh to order
that cart moved to the Phra Khanong side last month
agreed on the sit-down vs craving thing. that stall's nam prik pao donut is the sleeper pick if u get there before the office crowd, weird combo but it works. just dont expect change from a 50 if u grab a coffee too
I'd skip the hype and hit the pon de ring stand in Bang Rak market, it's the chewy Japanese style and way better than the fancy boxes.
Those sell out by noon so go before lunch, and the matcha cream one beats the plain glazed every time.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026
Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.
for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.
honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
