What are the best ways to experience Songkran celebrations?

the best move is to get out of bangkok entirely for at least one of the three days. i usually take the bus up to ayutthaya, the ruins get flooded with locals & you can splash people in front of thousand year old temples which beats silom by a mile. also dont sleep on the sand pagoda thing, in buriram & chiang mai they build little chedi out of sand in temple grounds for merit, most tourists never see it. bring a dry bag for ur phone & expect to be soaked from the moment u step outside until u get back to ur room

If you want the celebration without getting soaked every five minutes, the temples in Thonburi side are a good bet. Wat Arun draws crowds but the smaller riverside temples along the canal near Bang Yai stay calm, and you can still do the rot nam dam hua blessing with elders pouring water and chalking your wrists for good luck. I'd also suggest hitting a nighttime stage, the one at Lumphini around April 13 to 15 usually has luk thung bands and food stalls without the full daytime chaos. Book your transport early because the BTS gets packed and taxis will refuse to run metered fares for those three days.

Songkran in Bangkok splits into two very different experiences depending on where you go. The famous water fights on Silom and Khao San are fun for an afternoon but honestly Chaeng Wattana and the outer districts feel more like the real thing, families pouring scented water over elders' hands at home, temple visits in the morning. If you want the full traditional side, head to Wat Pho or Wat Arun early on April 13 for the song nam phra ritual where you pour water on Buddha images. Just don't wear anything you care about, and expect the whole city to shut down for a few days since most shops and restaurants close so staff can go home to their provinces.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
