My buddy raves about the atmosphere, says it's unlike any other bar in Bangkok. He's been going there for years, claims to know all the staff and all the best hidden booths. But he's vague about the details. My question is: What's the real story behind 71 Sports Club? Is there some unspoken rule, some secret handshake, some inside joke that explains its mystique? Seriously, this place sounds like a scene from a movie. Is it as cool as my friend makes it out to be, or is it just hype?

It's not a secret society, it's just a proper old-school Bangkok bar that hasn't changed a bit. The "rule" is don't be a jerk, and tip the staff well, they're the ones who've been pouring drinks since the 90s. Grab a Chang at the long wooden bar and soak in the patina; the mystique is just decades of good nights layered on the walls.

The mystique is mostly just that it's been around forever on Soi 71 and feels completely frozen in time. There's no secret code, but the regulars at the bar have seen it all and that's what gives it the vibe. I'd say grab a seat near the old boxing posters and order a beer tower, you'll get it after about twenty minutes.

The real story is it's just a stubborn holdout on a soi that's changed completely around it. No handshake, but if you want to feel it, order a Mekhong and soda and don't rush. The staff will treat you right if you're not there just for a selfie.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
