Mit Samphan Mystery?

The toy shrine near the canal bend on Soi Mit Samphan 2, right? That one's for a child spirit, locals call it Mae Nak Noi style but its actually a different story. Kids who died young get shrines like this, and people bring toys because the belief is the spirit stays a child forever. Offerings are almost always lakorn toys, little plastic animals, sometimes candy. Flowers aren't the point there, its about playthings. The one you found has been there since before the community got paved, families in the soi still maintain it but they keep it low key on purpose.

my grandma's been in Mit Samphan since the 70s and she says that particular one goes back to a kid who fell into the canal during a flood year, maybe 2518 or so. the toys thing is right but what most people miss is the san phra kumarn there sits on the boundary between two soi families, so both sides take turns cleaning it, which is why its always tidy but never has flowers. if you want the real story, go ask at the old tea shop on the corner in the morning, the aunties there know whose grandkid it was.

those shrines for kids are usually called san phra kumarn, & the giveaway is exactly what u noticed, no flowers. marigolds & lotus are for adult spirits or hong phra, a child spirit gets toys bc the belief is it never grows up. mit samphan has a few of these tucked along the canal, some families set them up quietly after a kid drowns or gets hit by a boat, & they dont advertise it. one thing tho, dont photograph it or point your feet at the base, thats the quickest way to upset the people who look after it

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
