Bangkok's Hidden Oasis?

The place was gorgeous, seriously Instagram-worthy. But I'm wondering, what's the best way to get around Bangkok from there without getting completely ripped off by a taxi? I tried using the BTS, but navigating to the nearest station with all the back streets was a nightmare. Any tips from locals? I want to explore more than just the hotel's amazing rooftop bar, which, by the way, has the best cocktails...

fwiw you could just take a tuk tuk from pattern to saphan taksin bts, but negotiate hard before getting in. theyll start at 200 baht, settle for 80-100 max since its like 3km. also the riverside has those shared vans near robinson bangrak that go to siam paragon for 20 baht, way cheaper than a grab and no meter bs. the trick is knowing the exact stop though, just tell the driver "siam" and theyll nod

another option that nobody mentioned is the khlong boat from saphan taksin. walk out of pattern to charoen krung, grab a motorbike taxi to the sathorn pier bts station for 20 baht, then take the khlong boat from the pier right under the bts. it goes along the sathorn canal all the way to pratunam for like 12 baht and drops you near central world and platinum mall. way faster than sitting in traffic on ratchadamri road and you see the old wooden houses along the canal. just watch out for the spray in rainy season lol

ngl the river boats are your best bet from pattern, but i'd go with the blue flag tourist boat instead of orange. it's 60 baht but way less crowded and the stops are announced in english which helps if you're not sure where you're going yet. also keeps you away from the taxi guys at tha tien who will try to charge you 300 baht for a 3km ride

for getting to the bts without the back street headache, just take a motorbike taxi from the soi entrance. costs like 20 baht and they know every shortcut. the drivers at the top of the lane are usually chill, just show them the station name on your phone

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
