I noticed this one particular brand of instant noodles, totally unmarked, just a plain white packet. It tasted... interesting. Like, weirdly addictive. Anyone know what that's about? Is it some kind of local, secret brand or a weird import? I'm seriously curious. The cashier wouldn't say anything...

those plain white packs are legit just factory surplus from a place in min buri that does bulk runs for street vendors around bangkok. they're not a secret brand or anything, just unlabeled stock that maxvalu picks up cheap when the regular supplier overproduces. the addictive taste is from the specific palm sugar blend they use, it's different from the mainstream stuff. if you want to find more without the game of luck, hit up the mom-and-pop grocery on soi sukhumvit 71 near the bts, they sell the exact same noodles with a tiny blue sticker on the pack for 6 baht

honestly it's prob just a generic brand they get from some random factory in ratchaburi or something. maxvalu stocks a lot of off-brand stuff under their own label that changes packaging all the time. if it's plain white with no markings at all it's likely a test product or a bulk pack they split up. the cashier staying quiet is normal thai retail policy tbh, they're told not to comment on products.

Yeah I know exactly which ones you mean. Those plain white packets show up at MaxValu sometimes and they're basically factory seconds from a place in Nonthaburi that supplies a bunch of street food stalls around Khao San. The cashiers stay quiet because management doesn't officially acknowledge they sell them, it's like a weird unspoken thing. If you want more of that taste without the mystery, check the small mom-and-pop shops along Charoen Krung near Saphan Taksin, they sell the same noodles under a different label for like 8 baht a pack.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
