honestly, the "secret room" thing gets passed around a lot but i've never seen it in any of the Makros i've been to. the real hidden gem is the walk-in freezer section near the meat, not a backroom. if you go to the one on Borommaratchachonnani, the staff there are pretty chill and if you ask nicely they'll sometimes let you order stuff direct from their import catalog that never hits the shelves. way more reliable than hunting for some mythical door
fwiw i think the "secret room" thing started because the rama 2 location has that back area where they store the pallets of imported stuff for restaurant clients. not exactly a hidden door, more like a warehouse section with a roll-up door. i've seen guys hauling out 50kg bags of fresh turmeric and those giant blocks of palm sugar there. if you hang around the loading dock around 8am you might catch the staff pulling out stuff that never makes it to the floor, just ask if they've got any "sang som" or "pla ra" in bulk, they'll point you to the right spot

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
