They say these things are practically indestructible, can survive a nuclear apocalypse and still haul a family of seven to the beach. My question is: What's the weirdest, most unbelievable thing you've ever seen a Hilux do or survive? I'm talking truly insane stuff. I'm hoping to hear some legendary stories before I become another proud owner. I've heard whispers of them pulling entire houses...is that true?

You know what gets me is how they just keep going even when you've totally given up on them. My buddy in Phuket had an old 96 model that he used as a support post for his carport after the engine finally gave out. Just chocked the wheels, left it there for two years with vines growing over it, then one day he needed to move some dirt and threw a battery in it out of curiosity. Fired up on the third crank, smoked like a chimney for ten minutes, then ran fine for another three years before the frame rusted through. That's

my uncle used his hilux as a generator platform during the 2011 floods. strapped a diesel welder in the bed, ran extension cords to half the soi for a week. truck didn't even complain. the pulling houses thing is real-ish, i've seen them drag concrete mixer trucks out of mud on construction sites in lat krabang. just keep up with the oil changes and it'll outlast you

The house pulling thing is not an exaggeration, I've seen it with my own eyes in Samut Prakan. A guy was moving a small wooden stilt house, maybe 20 feet across, and he had his Hilux hitched to one of the main support beams. The truck groaned a bit but dragged that whole structure about 50 meters down a dirt road, no problem. The more everyday weirdness is what gets me though. I know a guy who uses his 90s model as a water pump in the dry season. He parks it in a canal, runs a hose off the exhaust manifold, and the engine's vacuum pulls water up to irrigate his vegetable plot. It's not pretty but it works every year. Just don't expect the air conditioner to last long after that.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
