Wat Mai's Secret

The kids were amazing, totally energetic and so welcoming. But I noticed something... almost everyone seemed to know a shortcut through the back alleys, little paths I never saw on any map. They talked about hidden shrines and secret canals... Are these back alley routes actually safe for tourists to explore on their own, or are they best left to the locals?

honestly the soi dogs are the real gatekeepers of those back alleys. if they dont bark at you when you walk past, you're fine. the hidden canals near Wat Sai are gorgeous but get really slippery after 4pm when the moss grows back, i twisted my ankle there last year. ngl the shortcut behind the 7-Eleven on Soi Charoen Krung is actually safer than the main road because theres less motorbike traffic. just dont go past the big banyan tree with the red ribbons, that trail dead ends into someones private property

the kids grew up navigating those soi shortcuts, so they know which ones are actual public right-of-way and which cut through temple grounds or private land. if you're curious, ask one of the teachers to walk you through the route they use to the canal market on a saturday morning, that one's safe and you'll see the little spirit house tucked behind the old shophouse. just avoid the path that runs parallel to the railway tracks, that gets sketchy after dark and the train schedule is unpredictable

Most of those alley shortcuts are fine during the day, just watch your step and keep your phone tucked away. The hidden shrines are actually a cool find, but stick to ones that are clearly on a path and not behind someone's house.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
