Bangkok Nightlife Woes?

Seriously insane. My friend who lived in @Bangkok for two years warned me about the scams, tuk-tuk drivers, fake bars, the whole shebang. He swore he got completely ripped off at a place called "The Sexy Pussycat" or something equally ridiculous. He said he'd planned a chill night out, ended up paying a fortune for lukewarm Singha and questionable karaoke. So, my question is: any legit, not-totally-tourist-trap recommendations for a fun but reasonably priced night on Sukhumvit? I want a good time, not a hospital bill.

soi 22 is the move honestly, quieter than soi 11 but still has enough going on. there's a little japanese whisky bar called Bar 23 that's tucked behind a convenience store, no sign just a red lantern. pours are generous and the owner speaks enough english to chat without trying to upsell you. beers are like 100 baht and they have decent snacks for free.

if you want something more social, the sports bar at the end of soi 22 does buy one get one free on towers of singha before 9pm. it's like 300 baht for a tower that serves 4-5 glasses. mostly expats watching football or rugby, no scams just drunk guys arguing about offside calls

Skip the Soi 11 circus entirely and head to Soi 22. There's a stretch of bars between Sukhumvit 22 and 24 that's mostly expats and locals, no touts in sight. Try The Alchemist for craft beer, they've got 20 taps and the bartenders actually know what they're pouring, pints are around 180 baht.

For something completely different, walk over to Soi 26 and find the little soi called Sukhumvit 26 Alley. There's a hidden courtyard with three tiny bars, one does vinyl nights on Wednesdays and the owners just let you flip through their records yourself. No cover, no hostesses, just people drinking and talking. If you're hungry after, the boat noodles at Rong Si on Soi 26 are open until midnight and cost 50 baht a bowl.

if you want something that doesn't feel like a theme park version of bangkok, walk down to ekkamai soi 5/1. there's a bar called black amber that's just a concrete room with a sound system, no sign outside, locals just hanging on the sidewalk with beers. they do natural wine and weird craft stuff but also have singha for 70 baht. the crowd is mostly thai creatives, artists from the galleries nearby. no one's gonna push a lady drink on you because there's no ladies working there, just a dude who plays records and occasionally grills meat out front.

for late night food after, the khao man gai place under the ekkamai bts stairs is open til 3am. 50 baht for a plate of chicken rice, the sauce is spicy enough to wake you back up. grab a stool on the street and watch the drunk people stumble out of the clubs, it's free entertainment

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
