Is it all stuffy old money, or is there a more relaxed, modern side to it I should know about? I want a fancy stay, but not one where I feel like I'm in a museum. I'm picturing myself lounging by the pool, maybe grabbing a cocktail at one of the bars... but will I feel out of place in my slightly-less-than-immaculately-pressed linen shirt? Seriously considering packing a spare pair of nice shoes just in case...

You're overthinking the shirt and shoes thing. The MO's staff have seen it all and they're too professional to judge, plus half the guests are jetlagged in travel clothes anyway. The real quiet luxury move is booking a treatment at their spa and then using the steam room and jacuzzi area before your appointment, most people don't realize you can show up early and hang out there for free. That pool gets crowded on weekends though, so if you want a lounger without fighting for one, go on a weekday afternoon.

ngl the real move is skipping the hotel bars entirely and taking the hotel's free shuttle boat across the river to sornthong. it's this tiny family-run place with the best tom yum goong i've had in bangkok, costs like 200 baht and the river view at sunset is way better than any overpriced cocktail. your linen shirt will be fine everywhere, just don't wear it to the breakfast buffet if you spill curry on it like i did

honestly the pool area is where the vibe shifts completely. grab a lounger on the riverside side, that's where the younger crowd hangs and the service is still great but way less formal. the bamboo bar is a solid pick for cocktails too, it's tucked away and feels more like a secret garden than a stuffy lobby. your linen shirt will be fine, just maybe skip the shorts for dinner at le normandie if you're going there.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
