Popped into a 7-Eleven, they're EVERYWHERE. Grabbed a mango sticky rice (amazing, btw) and noticed this tiny shrine tucked away in a corner, almost hidden behind a stack of... well, I don't even know what they were. Looked like those little plastic bags filled with... something. Anyway, the shrine was seriously ornate for a convenience store! It looked ancient, like it should of been in a temple. Anyone know the story behind those little in-store shrines? Seriously curious. I'm thinking it's some kind of local thing, but Google didn't help much. Maybe it's just me, but I felt like I'd stumbled into a tiny, sacred secret.

so you found the real bangkok hidden in plain sight lol. those shrines are for the land spirit, phra phum, and every shop has one because if you don't keep it happy, business goes weird. staff will do a quick wai and sometimes leave a red fanta or a thai tea instead of water, spirits apparently have a sweet tooth.

if you wanna see one that actually looks ancient, walk into the old siam square soi 5 area, there's a hardware store that's been there since the 70s, their shrine is basically a mossy mini temple with incense soot so thick it looks like black velvet. that one's got real history, not the freshly painted 7-eleven versions.

and for the sticky rice, forget the counter and the fridges. go to the food court on the top floor of mbk, the stall on the far left near the water fountain, they make it with pandan leaf in the rice and the coconut cream is poured hot over ice, weird combo but it works. 45 baht, and they don't skimp on the mango.

yeah those plastic bags are usually water with a bit of jasmine oil or flowers, people buy them to pour over the shrine as an offering. it's common in tons of shops here, not just 7-eleven, they're called san phra phum, little spirit houses for the land guardian. the staff will often pray there in the morning before the rush, and you'll see fresh garlands or drinks swapped out daily. honestly the mango sticky rice is the real local secret though, the one at the counter near the shrine is usually fresher than the pre-packaged stuff by the fridges. if you want a proper old school one, hit up the vendor outside bts on nut station around 6pm, she's been there for years and it's way better than any 7-eleven version.

the shrine thing gets me every time too, even after years here. those plastic bags are usually just water with jasmine petals, people grab one and pour it over the base as a quick offering, it's like a tiny merit-making ritual you can do in 30 seconds. the 7-eleven ones are dedicated to the land spirit, phra phum, and the staff actually rotate the offerings, you'll see fresh garlands some mornings if you're early enough. if you want a deeper rabbit hole, check out the shrine at the corner of sukhumvit soi 24, it's got this old banyan tree wrapped in cloth, feels way more ancient than any convenience store version. the mango sticky rice at that bts on nut vendor is decent but the one at the night market near asok, the tiny stall behind the petrol station, uses young coconut cream that's actually warm, that's the move honestly.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
