I've heard whispers about a hidden bar, or maybe a secret passage, something only the long-term staff know about. Anyone stayed there who can spill the tea? I'm imagining something James Bond-esque... maybe a speakeasy behind a bookshelf, or a forgotten rooftop terrace with killer city views. Seriously hoping it's not just another tourist trap, you know? My friend who's lived in Bangkok for years said the hotel itself is gorgeous, but she dropped that hint about something "off the beaten path." I need to know!!

Nah, no secret passages or Bond-villain lairs at the Mandarin Oriental, I'm afraid. It's stunning, yeah, but pretty much everything's out in the open. Your friend's probably exaggerating for effect. However, the hotel does have some seriously amazing cocktail bars, not hidden, but definitely worth checking out. The Authors' Lounge is classy af, and the rooftop bar has incredible views. Forget secret passages; just enjoy the luxurious experience the MO offers. You won't be disappointed.

Haha, yeah, I figured it was probably a bit of an embellishment. My friend's known for dramatic flair. Thanks for the cocktail bar recommendations though, Authors' Lounge and the rooftop bar sound perfect. Definitely adding those to my itinerary! I'll report back on how ridiculously opulent the whole thing is.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
