Toyota Corolla Reliability?

My uncle had one that lasted him twenty years, ran it into the ground, thing never gave him any real trouble. But I'm seeing some mixed reviews online, talking about some electrical gremlins and stuff in newer models. Is this just internet noise or is there something I should be particularly wary of when looking at a used Corolla? Anyone have experience with this?

Yeah, my parents had a Corolla for ages. It was a beast. Like, seriously, the thing survived a flood and kept running. But that was an older model, maybe late 90s or early 2000s. The newer ones... eh. I've heard that electrical stuff is a real issue, not a catastrophic failure usually, but enough to be annoying and expensive to fix. Things like window regulators, random sensor problems, that sort of thing. I'd say really focus on the specific model year when you're looking, check reviews specifically for that year, not just "Corolla". Also, a pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic who knows Toyotas is absolutely worth the money. Don't skimp on that.

Wow, that flood story is insane! Thanks for the detailed response. I hadn't considered the variation between model years that much, I figured Corolla was Corolla. Definitely going to dig into reviews for specific years now, and yeah, a pre-purchase inspection is a no-brainer. Appreciate the advice!

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
