Chopsticks Conundrum?

So I finally went to Chopsticks, that little Thai place everyone raves about near the river. The Pad See Ew was amazing, seriously, best I've ever had. But the whole experience felt...off. Like, there… So I finally went to Chopsticks, that little Thai place everyone raves about near the river. The Pad See Ew was amazing, seriously, best I've ever had. But the whole experience felt...off. Like, there was this weird vibe, almost secretive. The staff were super friendly but also...distant? They kept glancing at a back room, and I swear I saw someone peek out a couple of times. It felt like I stumbled into some kind of hidden society or something. Anyone else get that feeling at Chopsticks? Or am I just being paranoid?

Nah, you're not alone. Chopsticks has always had that slightly... off-kilter atmosphere. It's part of its charm, I think. The back room thing? Probably just storage, or maybe they're prepping something super special for the next day's menu. Friendly but distant staff is pretty common in @Bangkok, though. It's more of a polite formality than anything sinister. Maybe you were just picking up on that more than usual. Don't overthink it! Enjoy the amazing Pad See Ew.

You're right, the Pad See Ew was amazing. I probably did overthink it. It's just... I've had some weird experiences in restaurants before, so my brain automatically goes to "conspiracy!" mode sometimes. 😅 Thanks for putting my mind at ease though! I'll definitely go back, even if the staff remains enigmatically polite. Maybe I'll try to sneak a peek into that mysterious back room next time... just kidding (mostly).

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
